GAMES, GLORIOUS GAMES

There's no point in denying it games make the tedium which every government tries to enforce on its citizens just a little more bearable.  In the case of some really good games they make it a lot more bearable.  Solitaire, however, does not fall into that category, certain roleplaying games, however, do.  Of all the games I've played and enjoyed, though, I still think that by far the best game in the world is politics, it's certainly one of the most exciting games and is invariably played for the highest stakes.  Since I can ramble on quite happily about politics at great length I've made provisions to do so elsewhere on this site so this page can get on with discussing some of the more (relatively) conventional games I enjoy.

STRATEGY

I'm quite fond of strategy games of just about all types, but I do have some particular preferences.  The two main types being turn based strategy games and real-time strategy games.  Of the former I prefer the old classic, the Royal Game, chess.  Of the latter there are a considerable number which have attracted my interest.  My current favourite is Dune 2000, even though Westwood Studios opted to base it more on the film by David Lynch than Frank Herbert's novels.

Starcraft is also pretty good for real-time strategy gaming, though it is somewhat limited when it comes to the size of one's armies.  A disadvantage not used by Westwood Studios' Dune 2000 and Command & Conquer series, why Blizzard chose to use it I'm still not sure.

FIRST PERSON KILL-EVERYTHING-IN-YOUR-PATH

For tension relief there's nothing in the world quite like Quake 2.  Though unlike many Quake fans I occasionally enjoy playing Duke Nuke 'Em 3D.  Recently, however, I have discovered the joys of Half-Life, which looks fantastic even when one doesn't have a 3D-accelerator video card, as much as one might want one.

ROLEPLAYING

Roleplaying, like politics is one of those things I could ramble on about for hours, which is why I've given it it's own page rather than include a rambling dissitation here.
