CITY CHESS PAGES

DISCLAIMER

It should definitely be noted from the outset that this little document was first envisioned to be played as a "game within a game."  It was in no way intended as instructions for a form of real life snuff chess.  I take no responsibility whatsoever for anyone else's actions with or without this spin on chess.  Nor do I encourage or support the breaching of any laws by people playing City Chess or other variant, like the Knight's Tour.  Anyone who wants to use these pages as a defense against charges of murder, rape, arson, drug trafficking, high treason, etc. ought to take a lesson in personal responsibility (also known as growing a brain).

As usual I maintain full copyright on the City Chess documents and its contents as my intellectual property.  It may be downloaded, provided that my copyright notice remains attached and no profit is made from it.  Anyone seeking to publish the document in a media or forum which is commercial or produces profit in any way must have my written authorization first.

THE GAME

The first released version of this document was written for the CamarillaTM on-going live action role-playing game set in White Wolf's World of DarknessTM.  Consequently there is reference to aspects of that game within the document, though these are few and far between.  It remains quite simple to use these rules with another game, whether that be a WoD game or set in some other world.

The original distribution of this document was a zip file containing Word 97 and plain text formats of the Camarilla release and the Traveller Standard true type font.  The latter being one of many chess piece fonts.  This font and a readme file have been circumvented now by this page and a very useful little program, EPD2DIAG.EXE, which enables one to turn any chess position into a GIF.  Examples of this can be seen on the City Chess FAQ page.

Other more general or genre appropriate versions of these rules will be added to these pages once they're edited and prepared.  The FAQ will be revised and updated as necessary.

It is said that all works of art or invention are forever "in progress," that they are never finished, merely abandoned.  The "general release" of these City Chess rules provide me, then, with the opportunity (read: excuse) to return to this little project of mine.  At first I just wanted to rewrite the final "advice" section which, in the original Camarilla edition, was clearly designed for a specific fictional universe.  Since the one of the key elements of City Chess is adaptability I definitely felt the need for the game to be adaptable to as many situations as possible.  I also wanted to take advantage of this rewriting to clarify some of the details in the City Chess rules which led to numerous questions and the neccessity for a FAQ.  Though the general release may make some questions of the FAQ repetitive, since it was originally written as a supplement to the Camarilla release, I will only be adding to it at this point in time.
